Unlike the other Islay distilleries, Bunnahabhain's classic spirit is very lightly peated more, akin to a rich, Highland malt. Fresh aromatic notes float over the little bit of smoke, with a malty sweetness and a fruit and nut quality. Older expressions develop a big, chewy body and lots of toffee, cherry and chocolate orange tones. There are a couple of heavily peated varieties that display the distillery’s historic style from a century ago.
